Pembroke
Welcome to Pembroke College!
Welcome to, what I would argue, is the most elegant college in Cambridge University! Pembroke college is the third oldest college at Cambridge. It is medium sized and quite central. It also has a lot of greenery.
My name is Mo’men, I am a second year HSPS student and I am here to help you fit in and resolve any issues you might face.
Pros
The college is quite central, it is at a walking distance from almost all lecture sites.
The rental and food costs at Pembroke are way cheaper than at most other colleges.
The college is not too big nor too small. Hence, Pembroke college is the most home-like college when compared to others.
Financial support is readily available and provided at Pembroke college.
Cons
Since COVID, Pembroke college has reduced its supply of halal food. So, it is not as readily available as it was in the past.
Washing facilities cost money.
Washing Facilities
Washing facilities are available at every accommodation building. They cost around two pounds per wash as far as I remember.
Muslim Provisions
Prayer Space
The chapel at Pembroke college is available for prayer at any time 24/7. Prayer mats and other needed items are provided. If anything else is missing, the college dean would be happy to provide it.
Halal Food
Halal food is always available at formals. Though it is not as readily available as it was in the past few years. However, there are plans to change that starting next academic year.
Ensuite
In general, ensuites are not common in Pembroke. Every room has a sink. Any specific requirements or needs can be accommodated for i.e I requested the installation of a water bidet which was helpful.
Concluding Remark
If you are a muslim student coming to Pembroke, then do get in touch! I would be more than happy to answer any questions or help with any problems settling in.
Signed,
Mo’men Ismail (mi372)
