Emmanuel
Welcome to Emmanuel College!
ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
Welcome to Emmanuel College (affectionately called Emma), one of Cambridge's friendliest colleges! My name is Abiaz, I am a second-year Medical student and I am here to help you fit in and resolve any issues you might face throughout the year.
Pros
The college is quite central, it is at walking distance from almost all lecture sites - particularly close to Downing site for NatScis and Medics/Vets
Very close to the local mosque as well as Mill Road which is home to a variety of halal shops and restaurants
The college is not too big or too small
A nice mix of greenery and cool architecture
Financial support is available
24-hour library
Free Laundry!
And of course, the ducks
Cons
Currently very limited halal options - looking to change this slowly
Ensuites are not as easily available as in some other colleges
Washing Facilities
One of the few colleges with free laundry! You simply drop off your bag of laundry and they do the rest - they fold it up for you and everything.
Muslim Provisions
Prayer Space
There is currently no prayer space available at Emmanuel College.
Halal Food
Halal food is not currently available in halls but sometimes available for formals. There are plans to slowly introduce halal food InshaAllah. The veggie/fish options aren’t too bad. During Ramadan, Emma offered a system of collecting food from hall just before Iftar.
Ensuite
For first-year students, only grade 6 rooms are ensuite. Other rooms have a sink (all rooms in Old South). Some do not have either and would need to be reliant on shared bathrooms.
Concluding Remark
If you are a Muslim student coming to Emma, then do get in touch! I would be more than happy to answer any questions or help with any problems settling in.
Emma is a lovely college and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time here!
Signed,
Abiaz Afzal (saa86)
