Fitzwilliam
Welcome to Fitzwilliam College!
A relatively small but cosy college with a tight knit and diverse community.
Pros
24/7 Library, good sized and well maintained. Also close to the Betty and Gordon Moore maths library which you can register access to and is also 24/7.
Decent gym with several machines including treadmill, rowing, free weights, 1 squat rack, 1 cables and cycling etc
2 Free Bookable squash courts (these can be used for Squash or other sporting activity within reason)
Spacious and modern rooms, Ovens and good kitchens.
Close to a Halal Butchery – Iqbros.
Nearby Aldi, Co-op, 24hr Londis, and the West Cambridge Site.
Close to Murray Edwards, Churchill and other ‘Hill Colleges’
Your card gives you a discount for renting a punt.
Good amount of secure bike storage space in different areas of the college.
Good JCR (Junior Common Room) with Board games, Nintendo Switch, Projector, Pool Table, Vending machine and Sofas.
Nice Brunch
Room with TV, PS4, Wii and a variety of games.
Newly refurbished Cafe
We also have a newly established ISOC within Fitzwilliam.
Cons
Slightly far from Downing/Sidgwick site.
20 min walk/7min cycle from ‘centre’
If you value the ‘old, castle-like’ aesthetic, you won’t find this here. (Although, I still think it is a very pretty college!)
Washing Facilities
Our laundry room is good and available 24/7. Your termly bill will take a small, fixed amount for laundry - but you are then able to use it as much as you wish!
Prayer Space
We have a chapel which also acts as a Multifaith prayer room, which I have personally used sometimes. Card access is not required to use the chapel and it is open 24/7.
Halal Food
Halal meat (usually Beef and Chicken) is sometimes served, but it is not fixed. There is a variety of meals served, which include seafood, vegan and vegetarian and other halal options too. The best bet is to simply ask the cooks on the day!
Fridge/Freezer Provision
Some Muslims in my college have got the permission to buy a freezer, I assume it’s a process which requires making the point of avoiding cross contamination of halal/non-halal meat. I can’t say it will definitely work, but historically it has, so hopefully!
Ensuite
First year accommodation is split into some ensuite and mainly semi-ensuite, with the later having a shower and sink in your room with shared toilets. 3rd year accommodation is mainly ensuite.
