Jesus

Welcome to Jesus College!

We’re your college reps, Riyad, A 2nd year CompSci, and Amin, 4th year HMLer (History and French)

As your college reps, our role involves being the first contact for Muslims at the college - Freshers and current students alike.

Pros

  • Stunning Grounds that are looked after by some of the most skilled gardeners in Cambridge

  • Great central location without the downside of being overrun by tourists

  • Great sports facilities and sports teams - A free gym as well

  • Overall great balance between older and newer buildings

  • Accommodation is very good throughout the years - Nearly all freshers accommodation is ensuite and in later years you have the option to stay in college or live in the houses on Jesus Lane

  • Very friendly Staff

  • Beautiful contemporary library

  • Relatively cheap formal pricing compared to other colleges

  • Very close to Mainsburys and not too far from Tesco and other shops

  • Jesus is quite a wealthy college, with funding available for students if they need it. Jesus also has several discretionary funds for travel and other activities.

  • Big enough College that you can find your people, but not so big that it’s overwhelming! Jesus is also fairly diverse compared to other colleges

  • Most people at Jesus love being at Jesus - iA you will too!

Cons

  • No ovens in internal accommodation

  • A bit of a walk from Sidgwick site (where the ISoc Prayer Room and a lot of the humanities lectures are), however if you cycle it is only a few minutes

Washing Facilities

  • The college has completely free washing facilities. If you are located in Chapel Court, you will have to follow a rota, where each staircase is allocated a day to do their washing. If you are in North Court, each staircase has their own washing facilities.

Prayer Space

  • We have a newly built multi-faith room in the basement of Library Court 1. Your CamCard is required to access it and it is open at the same time as the chapel, with out-of-hours access available through the porters

Halal Food

  • Halal Meals are served roughly once per week, and menus are available in advance on the College website, with halal options clearly labelled.

Fridge/Freezer Provision

  • The college can provide freezers in an accommodation kitchen specifically for halal food. All you need to do is email student rooms to request one, mentioning your staircase. Then the maintenance team will put a freezer in your kitchen, properly labelled as well to distinguish it from others.

Ensuite

  • You are allowed to be guaranteed an ensuite on religious grounds, and either way, most of the rooms are ensuite to begin with. In later years you can opt out of the ballot for religious reasons in order to ensure that you get an ensuite, however you will have less choice of who you get to live with.

Concluding Remark

  • Honestly, Jesus College is really nice, welcoming college and is a great place to both live and study. It’s definitely one of the most well rounded college, and sets you up well for an amazing time in College. We’re sure you will enjoy your time here, and we look forward to meeting you soon insha’Allah!
