Christ’s
Welcome to Christ’s College
Christ’s college was founded in 1505 and comes with some of the most beautiful college gardens and a tudor dining hall in which formal dinners are held for students six nights a week. It is well-known for its tight-knit alumni network, including Charles Darwin who was admitted to the college in 1827.
My name is Mariyah, a second year medic here; as the college rep I’m the first point of contact for any Muslims at Christ’s. Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions or concerns you may have at mh2164@cam.ac.uk
Pros
A college small enough to be friendly and personal, but large enough to welcome students and staff from over sixty countries
Very quaint and pretty, with many gardens and lots of greenery
It is located centrally, very well located for most university departments, including: Medicine, many of the Natural Science departments, Social Anthropology, Geography and Engineering, while the Sidgwick site, where many of the Humanities departments are located, and the new Science buildings at the West Cambridge site are only a short cycle ride away. It is five minutes from Sainsbury’s and a Tescos is also located right next to first court.
With a squash court and gym in college and sports field and boat house close by, there is every chance to take part in college sport
The upper hall serves reasonably priced meals three times a day, except weekends when brunch is served instead, and all sides are free with a main meal.
Cons
The plodge faces right out into the busiest part of town, around Petty Cury
Washing Facilities
There are two washing rooms, one in P staircase behind the third Court, it consists of one room with five washing machines, another with three tumble dryers, and a drying room including two ironing boards and irons, and one in New Court. Laundry is free.
Prayer Space
There is a multi-faith area located under the stairs leading to the library in the first court, in which you will find prayer mats too!
Halal Food
Neither the Upper Hall or the Buttery serve halal food unfortunately, however occasionally for some formals there is the option to request halal food when booking for a formal.
Fridge/Freezer Provision
College accommodation office should provide you with a fridge in your room if you ask for one, and they will do their best to provide one depending on availability. Freezers are not provided, and kitchens do not have freezers either (with exception to the graduate student building).
Ensuite
40% of the rooms at Christ’s college are ensuite, most of which are located in New Court and some in the Z building behind the third court. You can apply for an ensuite room for religious reasons, which is also very useful.
Concluding Remark
Christ’s is a beautiful college with great geographical connections both academically and socially, and if you wish to gain further insight and detail about the college please have a look at https://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/why-choose-christs
