Profiles

President

Safian Younas
Gonville & Caius College
3rd Year Medic

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
I am humbled to be serving what is an immensely vibrant and active ISoc. Cambridge is a whirlwind of diverse challenges and experiences and the ISoc plays an invaluable role in making that journey that much more manageable, memorable and spiritually fulfilling. Alhumdulillah.
My role involves representing the society, innovating and implementing ideas to improve it, liaising and working with external societies and organisations as well as overlooking its day to day running.
If you have any ideas, questions or concerns, please do get in touch: my291[@cam.ac.uk].

Vice President

Qamar Hussein
St. Catharine's College
3rd year Medic

Assalamualaykum waRahmatullah! My name is Qamar and I am the Vice President of this year's Shura which also makes me Head Sister. My VP role involves working in consultation with the President and the rest of Shura to ensure that things run smoothly within the society - from overseeing the organisation of events such as the weekly circles and the annual ISoc garden party, to monitoring the activities of the subcommittees. As Head Sister, I aim to represent the views of the more intelligent, creative and dynamic half of the ISoc membership on the exec committee :). I am also responsible for the sisters' welfare so if you need a chat, have something to complain about or for anything else, get in touch at qh214 [@cam.ac.uk].

For me, ISoc really is a family away from home. It's a community that has helped me to flourish in so many ways and continues to do so; from providing me with a strong network of friends who support and advise me, to helping me with developing my understanding of Islam and my understanding overall of how this world works. I really have grown as a person through ISoc and I know that by getting enthusiastic and getting involved, you will do so too inshaAllah!

Being part of ISoc will undoubtedly enrich your university experience, whether by broadening your intellectual and spiritual horizons, or simply by being (in the words of one former president) 'a home away from home'. So don't hesitate to get in touch at ra378 [@cam.ac.uk].

Treasurer

Osman Malik
Trinity College
2nd year Engineer

Salam alaikum, my name is Osman Malik and I am the treasurer of this great society. As treasurer, it is my job to keep track of and regulate the inflows and outflows of the green stuff (i.e. money). With the world economy out of I.C.U. and slowly recovering, bettering the financial position of Isoc should be easier inshallah. However, if you would like to sponsor, or know anyone who would, please contact me at om250 [@cam.ac.uk].

Communications Officer

Aamer Hason
Queens College
2nd year Engineer

Assalamu Alaykum. I'm Aamer Hason, a second year student at Queens' College, studying Engineering. My exact position within the ISOC is 'Communications Officer' which basically means that I'm in charge of all external relations with regards to the ISOC, in charge of publicity for all events and running the website. Other than the prescribed role I'm happy to help out in all matters ISOC related. As a shura and an ISOC we are always welcome any input from you. And finally if anybody has any problems with student life, anxiety about starting cambridge or anything not directly university related or any complaints or suggestions, then please contact either ISOC enquiries, which will be usually dealt by me, or feel free to contact me directly at sah86 [@cam.ac.uk].

Student Affairs Officer

Omneya Ahmed
Emmanuel College
2nd year Medic

Assalaamu alaikum! My name’s Omnya. I’m a first year medic at Emma and the student affairs officer of Islamic Society. My job description is to ‘deal with welfare and issues related to Muslim students within the Society’ but what does that mean exactly? Well, for me, what Isoc represents is an opportunity to develop yourself spiritually, a place to seek help and advice about academic issues and a way of meeting and hanging out with the coolest people who may just end up being some of your closest friends. I’m there to try and make sure that the Isoc continues doing just that so your uni life runs as smoothly as possible. Consequently, one of my responsibilities, and probably the most important one, is organising Jumah prayers every week.
Additionally, the people I work with include the prayer room rep to make sure that the prayer room is clean, pristine and in tip top shape for every Isoccer’s use; the social reps to organise events where members can chillax with their Isoc buddies and temporarily forget about those 3 essays that they’ve just been set; finally, I work closely with the access committee to help those thinking of applying as best we can. So calling to all prospective students: any questions about absolutely any thing, get in touch! I’m pretty easy going and eager to help.
Remember, if you ever wanna chat, you know where I’m at: oea21 [@cam.ac.uk].

Events Officer

Anissah Ramtoola
Churchill College
4th year Physicist

Assalamoualikom, my name is Anissah Ramtoola and I am a 3rd year Physicist at Churchill College. As the Events Officer for the ISoc it is my job to plan and organise events held by the society. As Edmund Burke famously said: “Good order is the foundation of all things” and inshAllah I will be glossing the foundations of the ISoc with good order and as a society, I believe, we can build an amazing infrastructure. Get in touch at afr29 [@cam.ac.uk].

Ex-Officio

Mirina Paananen
St. John's College
3rd year Medic

Assalaamu’alaikum, my name is Mirina and I’m a second year medic. I’m the ISoc’s ‘ex-officio’, which means that I used to be the President (as well as the sisters’ Vice President) and am now on the executive committee in an advisory capacity. I’ve been involved in the ISoc for the entirety of my time at Cambridge and can whole-heartedly say that it has been a fantastic experience. I’m still around, helping where needed to make sure things run smoothly and advising the new committee when necessary. I would encourage everyone to get involved with the ISoc – there are so many things to take part in, whether helping organise events, writing articles or simply coming along to the socials. Check out the subcommittee pages for more information.

If you have any ideas/queries then feel free to get in touch on mp520 [@cam.ac.uk].
